If we give in on the issue of whether or not Bush was elected rather than
appointed, then it must be said that Bush was elected to represent ALL of
the people of the United States. In his oath of office, George W. Bush swore to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
This President has decided to violate his oath of office and has instead
attacked the Constitution by some of his actions with the war in Iraq, and
on the domestic front has violated the First, Ninth, Tenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution (see Appendix) by proposing the Family Marriage Amendment.
George Bush is a President that represents only some of the people; people
who are privileged, connected, wealthy and own large Corporations. This
tendency becomes clear when one observes the allotted contracts to Dick
Cheney's buddies at Halliburton; contracts worth Billions of dollars that
were given without competition or bid, to rebuild Iraq.
George Bush has said not once, but twice in the last two days that Gays are undermining America. He accuses a sizable portion of the American public with "undermining the family structure". (It is estimated that there are more lgbt people in the United States than Jewish citizens). Bush further identifies that marriage is based on certain "religious and natural roots" and that these "roots" would be lost and marriage weakened.
What neither Bush, the republican party, nor the rabid right-wing factions
within and without the United States have failed to do, is to explain
exactly how allowing two people of the same sex to wed, would bring doom to an institution that has an over 50% divorce rate; is used as the basis for reality television where men and women choose their mate via a game show, where someone like Brittany Spears can get married for two days and than divorce because they were drunk, or where some women are trapped in violent, loveless marriages because their religion doesn't like divorce.
The plain truth of this issue is that none of the many adulterous television evangelists, politicians, right-wing conservatives, fundamentalist religions or for that fact, most religions cared anything about the state of marriage until gay people decided to fight for the right to marry. Now they are all up in arms to protect the "sanctity of marriage" from the gay community. In reality it all boils down to good ole American discrimination and hatred perpetuated by those who hate true liberty for all Americans but preach about the need for smaller government that stays out of peoples lives.
They just need to admit that they have to have a human target to vent their venomous evil. The early Chinese workers are no longer acceptable, Japanese Americans are no longer acceptable, Jews are no longer acceptable, Women are no longer acceptable, Blacks are no longer acceptable, Hispanics are no longer acceptable - so who's left? Why the gay community of course! Well, times have changed, progress has been made, civilization has advanced, and it is NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE to persecute the gay community. The glbt community must fight this oppression with everything at its disposal including civil disobedience. We must elect representatives that believe in the true America. We must start at the local level; town supervisors, mayors, commissioners, state representatives, Governors, and than onto the Federal offices.
Men like George Bush must become relics of a disdainful past, no longer
allowed to corrupt the purity of the American dream. It is time for us to
fight for the rights that God has given to each one of us; the right to love who we do by virtue of our nature and refuse to allow the civil authorities to interfere with our lives. Nothing has ever been gained by a minority that has not been fought for one way or another. It is our time, now.
APPENDIX
The First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Any attempt to prohibit same-sex marriage by the State based on religious tradition or dictate is in violation of the prohibition of the establishment of religion. The Family Marriage Amendment is an attempt to restrict the rights of a portion of the citizenry by means of religious definitions.
The Ninth Amendment: The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights
shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
Marriage was not enumerated within the Constitution and therefore the rights of Marriage cannot be denied or disparaged by the Constitution and is retained by the people by virtue of its exclusion.
The Tenth Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the
Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. The power to regulate marriage has never been delegated to the United States through the Constitution and therefore is reserved to the states or to the people.
The Fourteenth Amendment: Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
A State is prohibited from depriving any person of life, liberty or property without due process. Certainly the right to marry is a matter of liberty. This Amendment also prohibits the denial of equal protection of the laws to any person. Certainly laws that prohibit same-sex marriage fall within this prohibition.
